Northwest Events For 2011
While London used to be the go-to destination for cultural events in the UK, the capital has long since abandoned its crown as other cities across the nation become firmly established as hotbeds of culture - particularly in the vibrant North West. Liverpool and Manchester are two of the UK’s liveliest and most artistically productive cities, and are continuing to have a significant impact on many areas of the arts and culture.

Both cities are home to some of the UK’s biggest festivals, celebrating music as well as comedy, theatre and cultural diversity. Notable festivals include the Liverpool Comedy Festival, taking place in May at venues around the city, and the Manchester Irish Festival, which dedicates two weeks in March to celebrating the Emerald Isle just a short hop across the sea.
The North West’s musical heritage is known far and wide, with Liverpool producing The Beatles and Manchester contributing the likes of The Smiths and Oasis to the British indie scene. Both cities are therefore essential destinations for any touring music acts worth their salt, and this year sees stadium-fillers like the reformed Boyzone heading to the cities for what are sure to be nights to remember.
Sport is another proud tradition of the region, with many of the UK’s biggest football teams originating in the North West - including Manchester United, Liverpool FC, Manchester City and Everton, all of which will be staging a number of games at their home grounds in Manchester and Liverpool respectively. Racing fans can also look forward to The Grand National, taking place at Liverpool’s Aintree Racecourse in April, while this February sees both the English National Badminton Championships and National Squash Championships making their way to Manchester courts.
Even if your tastes are more obscure, you can trust the North West’s biggest cities to satisfy any niche - from Manchester’s Viva Spanish Film Festival to Liverpool’s Festival of Contemporary Dance. You can always rely on Liverpool and Manchester to hold their own when it comes to nationally celebrated events too - from New Year to Christmas.
The upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations in both cities could rival those of London - particularly as Liverpool is home to one of Europe’s oldest resident Chinese communities, thanks to its maritime heritage. Whenever you’re thinking of taking a cultural break to the North West, find cheap train tickets to Liverpool and Manchester online to make your money go further.
