Around the World for a Tenner
How easy is it to circle the globe via small family run restaurants and cafes? A staycation in London is a great time to explore the cuisines of the world, and by setting yourself a challenge of circling the globe you are more likely to get out to different parts of the city. Whether you start by going east or west here are my favourite places for the best and most affordable international cuisine.

It is a complicated choice, but I think for my global adventure I would have to make the following stops
- Eastern European Deli in Bethanl Green
- Maoz Falafel in Soho
- Chennai Dosa in East Ham
- BiBimBab Cafe in Bloomsbury
- Taqueria in W11

When I walked into the little shop just off of Cambridge Heath Road, the proprietor politely pointed out to me, that it was not a Polish food shop, but a store that specialized in food from Latvia, Russia and the Ukraine. It is absolutely delightful with a variety of rye breads, frozen dumplings, fresh sausages, as well as a variety of dry goods. This had to be on my tour, because you could shop there and have the chance to try out different recipes at home. It also covers a huge geographical area. People eat falafel across a huge geographic region as well. You will find it everywhere from Turkey to northern India and across the middle east. Maoz is a fast, fresh, and affordable take away, that lets you pile on as much fresh salad as you like.Chennai Dosa is a chain, but it stands out for its cheap and cheerful South India cuisine. It is popular with local families and the food is the epitome of authentic. The Bibimbab Cafe is a huge find. It serves really authentic Korean food within walking distance of central London attractions. The reason I have chosen some of these great eateries for my round the world tour is that the cuisine is somewhat simple and it is entirely possible with the help of online recipes that you would be able to make some of the dishes that you sample at home. Bibimbop is a classic example of a Korean cuisine that uses simple ingredients in a very specific way. You need only a minimal amount of specialist condiments like the special Korean hot pepper paste and you can turn vegetables and rice into something completely new and exciting. You can end the tour at the Taqueria and see a proper tortilla machine in action!
