Community pulls together

Community pulls together

Back in May this year a 60 meter section of Sutton Coldfield’s Boardwalk, in the New Hall Valley Country Park was destroyed by an arson attack. Volunteers came forward at the time to help with the clean up process and to ensure the safety of those visiting the park.

The weekend of the 20th/21st of August was the scheduled time for the massive rebuild and construction of the new boardwalk, and again the local community from all walks of life and cultural background came forward to lay the new flooring and foundations for the new walkway.

This sort of commitment by a local community shows that it doesn’t really matter who you are or what you believe we are all in this together. So when a local amenity was vandalised the community as a whole came together to clean up and repair the damage.

We spend too much time looking at the difference between us, such as skin tone, beliefs and even dress code that we fail to realise just how alike we really are. It isn’t until times like this that you see just how united a community can become and in some ways it is a shame that it takes this sort of devastation and destruction to bring out the best in us.

This is not the only time when a community has pulled together to face adversity and race, religion and sexual orientation has gone out of the window. We are rapidly approaching the 10th anniversary of the attack on the Twin Towers in New York, although it was an awful day and one that brought massive loss of life it did spark something inside us all. It was the day that people worked together and helped one another without question, prejudice or discrimination.

Maybe this is what we need to take forward into our everyday lives, that from disasters and arson attacks we prove that we can work together, that our difference need not be something that holds us back but something that can build a brighter and more culturally aware future for us and our children.
